{"id":22,"date":"2011-06-12T18:12:50","date_gmt":"2011-06-12T18:12:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/movieox.com\/?p=22"},"modified":"2011-06-25T18:07:21","modified_gmt":"2011-06-25T18:07:21","slug":"black-swan-mostly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/movieox.com\/?p=22","title":{"rendered":"Black Swan, mostly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To start, it\u2019s official.\u00a0 Darren Arronofsky is a genius.\u00a0 He\u2019s made great movies before.\u00a0 <em>Requiem for a Dream<\/em> was freakishly good and <em>The Wrestler<\/em> was simply amazing.\u00a0 You might think I\u2019m biased or predisposed to like an Arronofsky offering.\u00a0 You might think I\u2019m one of those fake asshat internet reviewers who plays favorites.\u00a0 Well, I both like M. Night Shymalan and think <em>Avatar: The Last Airbender<\/em> was one of the best animated shows of the last 15 years.\u00a0 And I HATED <em>The Last Airbender<\/em>.\u00a0 There was some potential there (which actually made it more painful to watch), mostly in the supporting actors (except for the retard who played Soka); but an epic failure is still failure.\u00a0 A steaming pile of shit doesn\u2019t smell any better for being epic.\u00a0 But I digress\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, though I\u2019ve enjoyed his other work, <em>Black Swan<\/em> is hard evidence of Arronofsky\u2019s genius.\u00a0 I hate ballet.\u00a0 I mean no disrespect to those gifted athlete\/artists who dedicate their lives to it; nor to those who can appreciate it.\u00a0 But I\u2019ve never been able to appreciate people jumping around in costumes(says the former pro wrestling fan and current hypocrite).\u00a0 When I say I hate ballet, I\u2019m more recognizing a flaw in myself than mocking the art form.\u00a0 I just have no appreciation for it.\u00a0 It bores the living crap out of me.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So when I\u2019m sitting on the very edge of my seat during a movie about ballet; THAT is a fucking achievement in storytelling.\u00a0 I was utterly engrossed in a story about a prestigious New York ballet company\u2019s production of <em>Swan Lake<\/em> and the struggle of a new headlining ballerina to get into her dual roles in the production.\u00a0 ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At its core, the film is about artistic interpretation and what an artist has to go through.\u00a0 It\u2019s much like <em>The Wrestler<\/em> in that sense.\u00a0 The art forms are different and the tone of <em>Black Swan<\/em> is much darker; but at their core, both movies are about what people go through to express their art.\u00a0 (yes, I used the word art to describe pro wrestling; its not the canvas its what\u2019s on it, long live Sting!)
